Outline

The center was founded in April 2004 for the purpose of promoting international communication and creating a network of scholars in the field of Japanese studies. We promote cooperation and knowledge sharing among the global Japanese Studies community. We encourage international joint research. We hold a Symposium of Japanese Studies in its Global Comparative Aspects, and also maintain an international and interdisciplinary information network.

Main Activities

The aim of Japanese comparative studies is to illuminate the relationship between foreign countries and Japan. Japan is historically and culturally located at the intersection of the West and the East. This location facilitates insightful dialogue between Japan and foreign countries, thereby illuminating their unique characteristics.

The center places a great importance on closing the gap between Japanese studies conducted in foreign countries and those in Japan. The difficulties for foreign researchers may include language barriers, the lack of dialogue among researchers, and discrepancies in research interests due to varying ideological backgrounds. To thoroughly close the gap, it is necessary for the Center not only to communicate our research findings to the world, but also to identify the kind of information foreign researchers seek. In this sense, the Center would serve as the hub of an international information network in Japanese studies.

1) Since 1999, holding an annual Symposium of Japanese Studies in its Global Comparative Aspects. Both Japanese and foreign researchers actively participate in discussions.
2)Conducting research projects that promote Japanese studies based upon international perspectives. Example: Studies on Confucianism in Eastern Asia.
3)Building academic networks in the field of Japanese studies.
4)Contributing to the establishment of Japanese as an important international academic language. The Center provides the Japanese language program.
5)Supporting female researchers from other Asian countries.
