Job Opening for Nine Assistant Professors in Pioneering Interdisciplinary Sciences ※finished

   How to Apply (FYI)
   Poster (FYI)

Ochanomizu University, a National University Corporation in Japan, invites applications for full-time appointments at the Assistant Professor level as a program-specific fixed-term faculty member in the following prioritized research fields: Bioinformatics, Quantum Information Science, Simulation Science, Soft-Matter Science, Supramolecular Chemistry, Ubiquitous Computing, and related basic and applied sciences. The program aims to develop the capacity of young researchers in terms of research ability and management skills to challenge these new prioritized research fields and expand scientific frontiers, and to support the assistant professors to obtain tenure with promotion to associate professor. The university aims to create a center of excellence in research, education and management through the program. This new challenge is called "Ochanomizu University Academic Production" and is funded by a five-year Special Coordination Fund for Promoting Science and Technology (July 2007 to March 2012) of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

The program seeks outstanding young researchers with excellence in research, education, and management, expecting them to independently lead pioneering research projects.

This program strongly welcomes active applications from female post-doctoral researchers and researchers abroad.

The program provides research support such as funding and space. In addition, the university provides each assistant professor a program-specific research fellow at the post-doctoral level, if necessary. The assistant professor will be able to participate in the process for selecting a program-specific research fellow.

The university assists, to the best of our ability, in housing, nursery, education for children and other matters, to enable them to enjoy life in Tokyo.

Plan to Promote Young Researchers

 (1)Summary
A human resource fostering organization, "Ochanomizu University Academic Production", directly under the Board of Trustees, has been established. In cooperation with the Division of Advanced Interdisciplinary Research, this organization aims at promoting young researchers to challenge new academic fields and to qualify for tenure track positions.

(2)Contents of Fostering System for Young Researchers
In the following ways the system supports young researchers, who want to obtain tenure positions at universities and institutes. The system employs about nine limited-term assistant professors recruited through international applications. They are provided with budget and research facilities in order to establish an independent research environment. Joint research with faculty in the Division. Teaching in English in undergraduate and graduate courses is also required. In addition, Trustees and cooperative faculty mentors provide support for applying for positions at other universities, etc. and obtaining competitive research funds.

 (3)Objectives

In the 3rd year: Limited-term researchers recruited by international application are required to achieve the targets below by the middle of the given period:

- Promotion of independent research
- Training for graduate course lectures on their major subjects in English
-Intermediate assessment by the committee, including outside members

This Academic Production not only encourages publishing papers in journals with higher impact factors, but also evaluates their highly creative research production with no relation to the impact factors.
At the end of the period: By the end of the period, the Academic Production will enhance teaching skills in both graduate and undergraduate courses, and encourage participation in symposiums and international conferences. As a result of these promotion and enhancement activities, the Academic Production aims to produce excellent human resources with educational abilities and management skills sufficient to obtain tenure positions.
After the period: Academic Production will continue to develop the system established through the program to supply the leaders of next generation in educational research at other universities, graduate schools, institutes, and industry.
