Public Lecture: Akira Ikegami-Another Perspective on Living Together in a Global Society

2010年6月16日更新

On Wednesday, June 16, 2010, journalist Akira Ikegami took the podium at Ochanomizu University and delivered an open lecture titled Another Perspective on Living Together, sponsored by the Global Collaboration Center in conjunction with Nara Women’s University, Japan Women’s University, and Konan Women’s University.

In Part 1, with the theme Living Together, Mr. Ikegami spoke on Japan’s official development assistance and on assistance-related problems in international society.

In Part 2, with the theme Akira Ikegami’s Perspective, Professor Yoichi Sakakihara of our Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences acted as facilitator for students of the four universities to ask Mr. Ikegami about the many challenges of Living Together in today’s global society, and about questions they encounter in their everyday research and activities. Mr. Ikegami offered a wealth of insight into what students need to do today, at a time of tremendous change, to help develop a society in which harmony reigns.

The session closed with a message for peace from Mr. Ikegami: “Find as many treasures as possible that you want to cherish throughout your lives ahead-like family, friends, and work. Only with those treasures can you bring about peace in society.” His message created an opportunity for all present to reconsider the essence of peace-building.

The event attracted 656 people from the universities and the general public.

I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Ikegami for agreeing to speak at Ochanomizu University despite his busy schedule, to the universities for co-sponsoring the event, and to all participants in the audience.
