International Peacebuilding Workshop

2010年12月9日更新

From Monday, December 6 to Thursday, December 9, 2010, Ochanomizu University and Nara Women’s University jointly hosted an international workshop on the theme Living Together, as part of the specially funded program Developing an Intercollegiate Network for Peace-Building in a Global Society: International Knowledge Cooperation for Bolstering Women’s Roles (2010-2013).

In Afghanistan, the elementary school attendance rate for girls is far lower than that for boys due to historical, social, cultural and economical reasons. To improve the situation for girls, consideration needs to be given to female education and female teachers, and school environments need to be developed so that both boys and girls can learn from each other.

Participants consisted of about 40 faculty members and students from five universities outside Japan: Vassar College and Mills College (United States), Kenyatta University (Kenya), Philippine Women’s University (Philippines), and Ewha Women’s University (South Korea); and six women’s universities in Japan: Ochanomizu University, Nara Women’s University, Japan Women’s University, Kobe College, Konan Women’s University, and Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts.

The four-day workshop was, in principal, conducted in English, making it somewhat difficult for the Japanese students. Yet they were able to understand and consider the lecturers’ discussions and join in the dynamic exchange of ideas on what we living in this time of tremendous change in international society need to know, study, and do regarding peace issues.

On the last day of the workshop, held at Nara Women’s University, the students held group presentations on the direction for research and action for peace-building in the future. They discussed peace-building from a truly global perspective, breaking down barriers between nationality and university.

We at Ochanomizu University hope to draw on our international network and continue to hold similar workshops and promote research and action toward peace-building.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the lecturers, university staff from participating universities, and faculty members of Kobe College who acted as interpreters for some of the proceedings for their cooperation in our holding this workshop.
