The Global Collaboration Center (GCC) assists students’ voluntary learning and activities in relation to social coexistence, including, for example, international cooperation and peacebuilding. It also holds inter-university events related to these issues to support interaction and learning with students from other universities. These activities and events are intended to enable students to deepen their understanding of social issues and acquire multi-faceted perspectives and knowledge so as to encourage further learning and action.

During the lunch break on November 26, 2021, eight undergraduate students (seven from Ochanomizu and one from Nara Women’s University), who had attended the 42nd Refugee Assistant Training Seminar held online by the Japan Association for Refugees (JAR) on October 30 and November 6, conducted a Zoom meeting with GCC's support to discuss the issues raised in the training seminar.

The refugee problem is an international issue demanding a solution. Japan has occasionally been criticized internationally for its harsh line on refugees. Comments about the training seminar made at the Zoom meeting included: “I learned about the difficulties experienced by refugees in Japan and the current situation, which brought the issue much closer to home for me”; “Rather than the bald facts, I learned about the human feelings”; “I realized that as a member of Japanese society, I could not allow myself to be ignorant”; “I saw that what I had regarded as an international issue is actually a domestic issue”; and “Learning is the first step; we should build from there to take action toward resolving the problem." Although it was only a brief 30-minute meeting, it was a good spur to further action for each of us.
