Commissioned by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Ochanomizu University conducted a training program (the Knowledge Co-creation program; KCCP) for fourteen trainees from eleven countries including, Indonesia, Egypt, Cambodia, Siera Leone, Georgia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Viet Nam, Marawi, and Laos, to develop human resources in the field of early childhood care and education (ECCE) from November 11, 2024 to December 6, 2024. The fourteen trainees were administrators, educational inspectors, supervisors, and other leadership positions in the field of early childhood care in their respective countries. This program was in the first year of the third phase (2024-2026) of the KCCP Early Childhood Care and Education.
The international community have recognized the importance of a comprehensive approach that integrates care and education from early childhood and has reinforced structures to support developing countries in the field of early childhood education. However, in developing countries, there is often a shortage of human resources who are specialized in ECCE.
Therefore, Ochanomizu University organized programs geared toward regions in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia where access to ECCE and improving its quality are particularly urgent issues. Aiming to develop human resources at the level of ECCE policy, the lectures addressed ECCE and early childhood support in Japan, covering systems and policies, curricula and teaching methods at day-care and nursery schools, human resource development, and evaluation. The trainees also gave presentations on the situation concerning ECCE in their own countries and exchanged opinions with each other. The goal of these activities was to improve trainee knowledge and skills with regard to early childhood support.
Questionnaires and evaluation sessions at the end of the program indicated a high degree of goal attainment and satisfaction. Trainees will use the action plans they presented on the final day of training as the basis for applying the outcomes of the training in their respective countries.
