COIL stands for Collaborative Online International Learning. COIL is a new online education method that allows faculty and students to be connected globally with institutions abroad while being on their home campuses.
This method can be applied in diverse ways, such as offering joint online classes using ICT tools like Zoom, accessing a video lecture recorded by a foreign institution’s faculty to send questions and get feedback interactively during a class period, having discussions (exchanging messages) on specific topics via SNS with students abroad, collaborating on problem-solving projects and so on.
Since 2018, Ochanomizu University, Sophia University and the University of Shizuoka have been jointly implementing a COIL project, “Development of COIL Programs for Human Security and Multicultural Coexistence” funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan under the “Inter-University Exchange Project to Support the Formation of Collaborative Programs with Universities in USA and Abroad using COIL-style Education.” Today the three partner universities are promoting COIL with partner institutions abroad including ten universities in USA.
