Ochanomizu University was established in 1875 as Japan’s first national institution of higher education for women and has a history of close to 150 years. Throughout these years, the university has forged a path as a leader in women’s education in Japan. Many of the graduates have made outstanding achievements in a variety of fields. They are active both in Japan and abroad.

Ocanomizu University sets a mission of "being a place where all women motivated to learn can achieve their dreams." Ochanomizu University aims to help all women around the world to pursue their dreams, including women in developing countries who want t study, but are unable to do so. The University has been working tosupport women and their growth regardless of nationality or age.

In recent years, there has been an unprecedented need for woman to play an active role in society. Women are expected to possess a plethora of specialized knowledge and to exercise leadership skills from a global perspective. In addition to conducting advanced cutting-edge research, Ochanomizu University is striving to realize an equitable society and to foster female leaders who can play an active role in our globalizing world. Furthermore, in response to the social demand for women to play active roles in the fields of science and technology, we are focusing on a liberal arts education that integrates the humanities and sciences, AI and data science education, and more.

Ochanomizu University will continue to fulfill its role as a distinct institution of higher education by improving and reforming its education and research, so that all who study at the University can realize their dreams, create a prosperous future, and continuously work to inspire hope in society and the people around them.
