Temporary Support for On-campus Researchers

2024年4月19日更新

From the perspective of gender equality, the University has been offering a temporary support program since FY2010 to provide rewards to on-campus researchers who are pregnant, raising a preschool child, caring for a relative, or nursing an ill relative, as well as rewards for their assistants.

Requirements for the Support Recipients

  • Applicants must be full-time faculty members affiliated with the University (regardless of gender, including fixed-term faculty members and research fellows).
  • The applicant must meet one of the following conditions at the time of application.
    1) Caring for a relative (spouse or a relative up to the second degree) (the nursing care level is " Needed Support Condition" or "Need for Long-Term Care").
    2) Nursing for a relative (spouse or a relative up to the second degree) who is ill.
    3) Pregnant (except for the applicant who is on maternity leave)
    4) Raising a preschool child (applicant's child)
    5) In need of special support other than 1 to 4 above.

※Researchers who have received temporary support in the past may also apply.

Support Period

  • First term: Within 6 consecutive months during the period from April to September of the fiscal year
  • Second term: Within 6 consecutive months during the period from October to March of the fiscal year.

(If the applicant no longer meets the requirements for support during the period, the support will be provided until the following month)

Support Details

  • The number of recipients is expected to be approximately 5 people.
  • Reward will be paid to assistants who provide technical and administrative support for the education and research activities of the recipients.
  • Assistants will be appointed for a maximum of 6 consecutive months and, up to 40 hours per month as a general rule.
  • Travel expenses for assistants will not be paid.
  • If there are too many applicants, the number of hours of support will be determined by screening.
  • Basically, assistants must be recruited by the recipients themselves (consultation is available at the Ochadai Jinzai Bank, which is under the jurisdiction of the Institute for Global Leadership).

Main Support by Research Assistants

Research assistants help with experiments and surveys, data entry and organization, data analysis, proofreading and formatting of figures and tables, preparation for thesis writing, information retrieval and collection, preparation for research grant applications, preparation for conference presentations, translation, administrative and accounting procedures, and organization of materials.

Support Effects (Comments by recipients in FY2022)

As the deadline for conference presentations and papers was approaching, having the support of assistants was very helpful and reassuring in my research and work. In particular, the assistants helped me with tasks that used to take a lot of my time, such as organizing information and data, even though the tasks themselves were simple, and this gave me more time to focus on the essential parts of my work.
In addition, since the assistant was a graduate student in the same field, it was a great opportunity to learn together and discuss the results of the analysis on a regular basis, rather than just asking the assistant to do the work. I feel that the temporary assistance provided not only physical support, but also mental support.
It also changed my mindset that it is possible to receive support from others during the time when I am taking care of my child, instead of trying to do everything by myself. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the temporary support I was able to use this time.
(From a woman who received support in the second term while raising preschool children)

Although the number of in-person classes has increased this year and the amount of work that must be completed in the campus has increased significantly, this assistance makes me work easier. In particular, the burden of the work currently undertaken by the assistants has decreased as a result of this support, allowing me to focus on "the work that only I can do," such as research, preparation of teaching, and department administration.
