Following the impact of COVID-19, the Summer Program has been held online from 2020 to 2022. In 2023, we resumed in-person activities.
In 2025, as in 2024, we continued to leverage the experience gained from the previous years. For the English Project Work Course, students from our partner universities abroad and our university collaborated on projects. We held online seminars before their arrival (July 7–16) to start group. After arriving in Japan, they engaged in in-person classes and group work.
The Japanese Language Course for Japanese learners also offered an online buddy activity with a Japanese conversation partners from July 1 until their arrival. Classes for the Japanese Language Course and the Subject Based Course in English started on July 23.

A total of 243 participants joined the program: 82 international students (from 23 partner universities in 17 countries and regions), 67 students from our university, 1 student from a domestic partner university, 17 students from affiliated high schools, and 76 members of the Summer Program Student Committee.
In the Japanese Language Course, in addition to classes, students enjoyed a one-day tour of Tokyo on their own and gave final presentations on August 5.
The Subject Based Course featured intensive lectures in three sub-courses:
・Current Issues in Japanese Culture and Society under Globalization
・Diverse Fields and Key Ideas of Natural Science
・Exploring and Creating Fulfilling and Healthy Human Life in Modern Society
In the Project Work Course, multinational teams provided opportunities to learn together about Japanese society, international issues, and the leadership skills needed to address them.
As part of the Project Work Course, a special lecture was delivered by Ms. Misa Kenmiya, Special Advisor for Sustainability Promotion and Director of the Sustainability Promotion Office, JICA, titled “What is sustainability and How can you engage?”. This lecture deepened participants' understanding of global leadership. In addition, as a special collaboration commemorating the 150th anniversary of the university's founding, a lecture and live performance by Ms. Michiyo Kagami was held: “Daikagura and Lucky Customs in Japan.” Participants learned about the history and meaning of Daikagura and Japan's “Omedetai culture,” and experienced the symbols of happiness embodied in traditional performance.

Cultural events included “Kyogen Workshop”, “Wagashi (Japanese sweets) Class”, KODO Experience”, and a joint event with Ochanomizu University Junior High School on the theme of the school song, titled “Migakazuba Art” (with 52 junior high school students participating). Through these events, participants deepened their understanding of Japanese culture.

The Summer Program Student Committee, a volunteer organization of our university's students, organized and managed the opening ceremony, campus tours, welcome party, club activity experiences (calligraphy), Nihongo de Asobou (an event to enjoy Japanese language), one-day tours to Kawagoe, Kamakura, and Enoshima, the closing ceremony, and the farewell party. They also provided airport pick-up, produced program booklets and daily life support guides, and conducted online buddy activities before arrival. With the leadership of experienced committee members, the program was carried out successfully, fostering lively international exchanges and concluding with great success.
