About Us

Our mission

Our mission is to serve as the base for promoting SDG activities on the whole campus by providing SDG-related educational and research programs by collaborating with local communities, private enterprises, and various organizations.
As a result of these activities, we aim to develop students who will move society forward actively to achieve the SDG goals.
We named our SDG activities “OCHA-SDGs,” with the keyword “seikatsu-sha.”*
It is indispensable for each “seikatsu-sha” to accumulate small daily efforts from a long-term perspective to achieve a sustainable future.
Along with our highly motivated and interested students, we set our SDG promotion activities with subjects closely related to our lives such as food loss, resource recycling, ecosystem, behavioral science, and consumer education.

What are SDGs?

The abbreviation “SDGs” stands for the Sustainable Development Goals that were unanimously adopted by the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit held in September 2015. They consist of 17 goals and 169 targets that were set to achieve a sustainable world. The SDGs are global goals in which not only developing countries but also developed countries eagerly engage based on the pledge, “Leave no one behind.”

The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings are the world’s first global initiative to assess and showcase universities’ contributions to society. Published by the UK-based magazine Times Higher Education, the rankings evaluate institutions’ progress toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ochanomizu University submitted data related to selected SDGs for its third participation in the rankings.

The results of the 2025 THE Impact Rankings (based on the FY2024 submission) were released in June 2025. A total of 2,318 universities from 126 countries and 68 universities from Japan were included in the overall ranking.

For the third consecutive year, Ochanomizu University was ranked No. 1 in Japan for SDG Goal 5: Gender Equality.
