About Us

Our mission

Our mission is to serve as the base for promoting SDG activities on the whole campus by providing SDG-related educational and research programs by collaborating with local communities, private enterprises, and various organizations.
As a result of these activities, we aim to develop students who will move society forward actively to achieve the SDG goals.
We named our SDG activities “OCHA-SDGs,” with the keyword “seikatsu-sha.”*
It is indispensable for each “seikatsu-sha” to accumulate small daily efforts from a long-term perspective to achieve a sustainable future.
Along with our highly motivated and interested students, we set our SDG promotion activities with subjects closely related to our lives such as food loss, resource recycling, ecosystem, behavioral science, and consumer education.

What are SDGs?

The abbreviation “SDGs” stands for the Sustainable Development Goals that were unanimously adopted by the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit held in September 2015. They consist of 17 goals and 169 targets that were set to achieve a sustainable world. The SDGs are global goals in which not only developing countries but also developed countries eagerly engage based on the pledge, “Leave no one behind.”

What are THE Impact Rankings?

Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings are the first and only global attempt to visualize and document the evidence of universities’ impacts on society, assessed by the English educational magazine “Times Higher Education.
Times Higher Education does this by measuring universities’ achievements in delivering the United Nations’ SDGs.
Initially launched in 2019, last year counted 1,523 university entries from 109 countries, including 84 universities from Japan. Each university enters by choosing at least four SDG goals out of 17 (SDG17: PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS is a required field for entry). Ochanomizu University gathered SDG-related academic data that correspond with the goals of our choice and has just completed its first entry for the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022.

The results for fiscal year 2022 were announced on June 1, 2023. Ochanomizu University ranked first in Japan for SDG Goal5: GENDER EQUALITY.
