Report on Joint Seminar “Learning Sustainability from Business – Water and PET Bottles, with Suntory as a Case Study”

On July 2 and 9, 2025, we held a joint seminar titled “Learning Sustainability from Business – Water and PET Bottles, with Suntory as a Case Study” in collaboration with Suntory Holdings Limited.
In this seminar, we welcomed Mr. Nobuyasu Kitamura, Senior Advisor, Corporate Sustainability Department, Corporate Sustainability Division, Suntory Holdings Limited, who delivered lectures and facilitated workshops under the theme “Learning Sustainability from Business.”

Session 1 | Lecture: Sustainability Management & PET Bottle Recycling
【Date】 Wednesday, July 2, 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM
【Venue】 Inter-Faculty Building 1-302
【Program 】 A presentation by a representative from Suntory’s Sustainability Management Promotion Headquarters on sustainability-led business practices.
【Participants】 Students of the university (up to 20, by application, first-come-first-served)

Session 2 | Workshop: Recycling Behavior Workshop
【Date】 Wednesday, July 9, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
【Venue】 Inter-Faculty Building 1-302
【Program 】 In groups, students toured the campus to observe PET-bottle collection points, identify issues, and share proposed solutions.
【Participants】 Students of the university (up to 20, by application, first-come-first-served)


In the session 1, Mr. Kitamura discussed Suntory’s sustainability management efforts, focusing on PET-bottle recycling. He emphasized that the starting point of the recycling cycle is us—the consumers—a point that left a strong impression on many participants.
In the session 2, conducted as a workshop, students split into groups to assess the current state of recycling on campus.They presented findings and proposed solutions based on lessons from the first session.
Despite the short timeframe, each group successfully identified issues and offered meaningful proposals.

Both the Q&A sessions and the exchanges of opinions among the students who attended were conducted actively.
