On Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, the EDI program held an online lecture. Approximately 30 people, including faculty members, students, and international students, participated.
In the first part, Associate Professor Myles CARROLL from Ochanomizu University delivered a lecture and discussion titled "Gender and Politics in Contemporary Japan." The lecture explained Japanese politics and gender issues, following major political developments from the post-war period to the present, from a gender perspective. The lecture raised concerns about the lack of female representation in current Japanese politics and explained factors and solutions, such as the necessity of a gender quota system, the enactment of laws against harassment, and the enhancement of public welfare supports.
Finally, there was a discussion session, and the participants actively contributed their opinions.
The second part, a student exchange session, was conducted by the second-term members of the EDI project at Ochanomizu University. After the three moderators introduced themselves, there was an introduction to Ochanomizu University. Then, participants were divided into breakout rooms where they introduced themselves in English and looked for commonalities among themselves. Finally, the participants presented what they discussed to the whole group, and the exchange meeting was concluded.
All participants actively expressed their opinions and engaged in lively discussions.
