Title:
“Challenging the Gendered Norms of Leadership: Implications for Indian Women Leaders”

Abstract:
While India has made enormous strides as a rising economic powerhouse in the past few decades, the condition of women has not improved significantly. Women still remain underrepresented in the workforce, especially in the leadership ranks. This talk will highlight how the traditional cultural values (e.g., patriarchy) continue to negatively impact women's ascent to high-ranking leadership roles through shaping gender roles for working women inhabiting the public sphere. Specifically, I will discuss how women leaders in India are caught between the expectations of ideal working and ideal mothering in a society that has embraced the constant balancing of tradition and modernity as mark of honor and distinction, especially for women. I will conclude with discussing different frameworks for understanding gender in organizations and the implications for women leaders in India.

Title:

Posyandu Cadre: Empowering Indonesian Women Leaders in Community-based Healthcare”

Abstract:
Maternal and child health is a major health priority. Indonesia still struggles with a high maternal mortality ratio (MMR), where 305 maternal deaths occurred for every 100,000 live births (MoH, 2020). Indonesia hopes to reduce MMR by promoting healthy pregnancies and safe births through community health care services, namely, community health care centres (Puskesmas), village midwifes' programme, and village integrated health services (Posyandu).  The Posyandu Cadres (PCs) are the key health care providers in the Posyandu. The PCs are all women who meet and visit their community, who are also all women. The PCs are community volunteers who have been trained by village midwives and have the responsibility of promoting the use of Posyandu services. In current COVID-19 pandemic, the performance of Posyandu was critically affected. Subsequently, many Posyandu do not run optimally and need to be revitalized. This presentation, argue that empowering PCs should take a holistic-integrated approach. Specifically, this presentation will discuss the importance of work context (i.e., leader self-efficacy, religious values and coping mechanism), and family context (nuclear and extended family; gender equality and family satisfaction), as well as organizational system and community needs to improve PCs' performance as agents of change for maternal and childcare wellness.

“Women in Higher Education: Leading across Disciplines and Cultures”

Abstract:
As I reflect on my journey to be a leader in higher education, I found the importance of so many factors. I realize that, in my growing up, my grandmother and my father are key influencers in the development of my values and characters in serving for education. They trust me and see my potentials even before I realize it. They are role models that demonstrated the importance of education and the value of giving back to society. They have given me the moral courage and opportunities to explore and to grow. My development is also highly influenced by the opportunities to study in top schools with different religious background than my religion, as well as experiences in different countries and cultures. The role of Takahashi family in Yamagata is significant. They helped me to see differences and similarities across cultures, and strengthened me to never be afraid. As I am continuing my role as a leader, I continuously empowered by my mentors, friends and confidants, as well as by husband. I believe that leaders are made not born, and one’s perspective is very important: about yourself, as a community leader, or as an organization leader.
