Report on Participation in the 4th Exchange and Opinion Exchange Meeting for Introducing Sustainability-Related Initiatives by Universities in Bunkyo City
On October 31, 2025, the Institute participated in the 4th Exchange and Opinion Exchange Meeting for Introducing Sustainability-Related Initiatives by Universities in Bunkyo City, held at the Bunkyo Civic Center (Bunkyo City, Tokyo).
This meeting brings together universities and related organizations within Bunkyo City to present their ongoing sustainability initiatives and to exchange views and ideas. At this session, presentations were delivered by Atomi University, Chuo University, the University of Tokyo, Toyo University, Japan Women’s University, the University of Tokyo Co-op, and Ochanomizu University.
Representing the Institute, the Chair of the OCHA-SDGs Student Committee delivered a presentation introducing the committee, a student organization that conducts activities in collaboration with the Institute. The presentation also reported on food drive initiatives implemented in cooperation with affiliated schools.
The report explained that the OCHA-SDGs Student Committee operates on a project-based system, with members engaging daily in a wide range of activities. These include Shuwaberi (a sign language study group), Oyuzuri Fes (an event for redistributing unused but usable items), water server installation projects, and collaborations with affiliated schools, other universities, local governments, and private companies. It was also introduced that the committee employs “Logic Models,” which visualize the logical relationships between issues, objectives, and actions, to ensure the sustainability of its activities.
The presentation emphasized the importance the committee places on capturing the overall structure of each project and consolidating it into a single Logic Model. The creation of Logic Models was presented as a method that contributes to:
(1) reviewing projects from multiple perspectives,
(2) improving the clarity of project communication,
(3) fostering interaction among members, and
(4) enhancing motivation.
We noted that this approach supports the “sustainability of the activity itself,” an aspect that is often overlooked in discussions of sustainability.
In addition, the presentation highlighted the distinctive characteristics of the food drive initiative at Ochanomizu University. By leveraging the university’s integrated campus, which includes a kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, high school, and university, the activity is conducted on a campus-wide scale. Through this initiative, the OCHA-SDGs Student Committee is contributing to both the reduction of food loss and the enhancement of social welfare.
