“Heroes in Popular Culture: Kabuki and Manga II”

Note: In consideration of gender-sensitivity, we do not dare to distinguish between “Hero” and “Heroine," but use “Hero” as an inclusive expression that transcends gender.

Kabuki and Manga – two seemingly contradictory aspects of Japanese culture, traditional performing arts and modern subculture, have many things in common. In this discussion between our two special guests, they unravel the affinity between the two genres from the perspective of none other than “Heroes”.

In recent years, many theatrical productions based on manga have become popular in Japan, and this trend has also spread tokabuki. The performances of the Super Kabuki “ONE PIECE” (2015) and the New Kabuki“NARUTO” (2018) attracted a great deal of attention, becoming a catalyst for the spread of kabuki to the younger generation. Through this discussion, we will discover the affinity between kabuki and manga, the characteristics of the Heroes of both genres, and the significance of media mixes from perspectives of both kabuki and manga.
