OCHA-SDGs Student Committee Members visited environmentally friendly facilities

On February 18, student committee members and the institute's staff visited the warehouse of Second Harvest Japan (the first Food Bank in Japan) and on March 15 we also visited the Food Ecology Center, Inc.

  • SHJ(SECOND HARVEST JAPAN)
  • FEC(JAPAN FOOD ECOLOGY CENTER, INC.)

At Second Harvest Japan

We visited the pantry where users receive food and the warehouse where collected food is stored.

Second Harvest Japan is the food bank to that we donated our collected food through Food Drive held at our university with the collaboration of affiliated schools last year.

What we learned is that users are anticipating not only "the minimum necessary meal", but also "a wide range of foods such as sweets".

The more various the donated food is, the happier the users will be.

In addition to "support for needy households", it is important to carry out the food drive from the perspective of "sharing the happiness of enjoying food."

At Japan Food Ecology Center, Inc.

We visited a facility that collects "food loss" generated at supermarkets, factories and homes and recycles it into feed for pig farming.

Foods that can be recycled into feed are strictly controlled in terms of nutrients and types.

To satisfy these strict criteria there is still a huge amount of food that cannot be recycled and abandoned.

From these, in order to reduce food loss, it is essential for each consumer to change their awareness "little by little" and take action.
