We visited the warehouse of Second Harvest Japan on August 8th and September 11th.

The food collected through the food drive held at the university and each affiliated school and kindergarten since 2022 is delivered to those in need through the NPO Second Harvest Japan .
This time, we were given a tour of the pantry, which is a base for directly delivering food to those in need, and the warehouse, where donated food is stored and shipped upon request from the government and companies.
At the pantry, we were told that they value an open atmosphere where users can select the food on display as needed and feel no debts to utilize the facility. We learned that there are restrictions on the period and number of times the service can be used, and that they intend to promote independence in all aspects of life through temporary food support.
This visit made me recognize that people who need food aid as a stern reality. In organizing the food drive, it was important to think about “what we want to deliver” by using our imagination to picture the recipients and their situation, rather than just focusing on whether we have any extra food. This was a good opportunity to reaffirm our concept of “sharing with others” to conduct a food drive.
